Direct To Rust Metal Paint
Usage Guide

Preparation

  • Remove all loose rust, dirt, grease and salt with Hammerite Brush Cleaner & Thinners and rinse with clean water. Allow time to dry.
  • For painted metal surfaces wash down thoroughly with diluted detergent, rinse with clean water and allow to dry. Paint a small test patch on the painted surface to ensure compatibility with existing paint. Any reaction will occur within the hour. If there is, remove all paint then wash down with degreaser. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry.
  • For smooth metal surfaces, lightly abrade for maximum adhesion.
  • On bare zinc, aluminium and galvanized metal surfaces use Hammerite Special Metals Primer before applying Hammerite Direct To Rust Metal Paint.

Note: Special precautions should be taken to avoid inhalation of dust during surface preparation of pre-1960's paint surfaces as they may contain harmful lead.

Application

  • Ideal application temperature is 8 to 25ºC. Lightly stir, do NOT mix vigorously.
  • By brush: apply 2 thick coats, ensure that all edges and corners are covered adequately. Do NOT over apply as sagging will occur.
  • By roller: apply 2 thick coats. Thin with Hammerite Brush Cleaner & Thinners at 9 parts paint to 1 part thinners. Brush in edges first, for best results.
  • By conventional spray: apply 4 thin coats and thin with Hammerite Brush Cleaner & Thinners at 2 parts paint to 1 part thinners. Set spray gun at 25/35psi and use fan spray at maximum volume. Allow 1-8 hours between coats.
